Biography

Composer Sergio Roberto de Oliveira was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and educated at the Universidade do Rio de Janeiro (Uni-Rio), studying with Dawid Korenchendler. He also studied with composers Guerra-Peixe, Vânia Dantas Leite, and Tato Taborda. He has been working with classic and popular music as a composer, arranger, producer and pianist.

Sergio has received commissions from many important interpreters, including the duo Rónai/Moore, the guitarist Nicolas de Souza Barros, flutist Laura Rónai, Trio Syrnx, flutist Tom Moore, harpsichorder Tracy Richardson, violinist Lisa Brooke, etc.

Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is also a member and one of the creators of the group of composers Prelúdio 21. His works have been performed at Prelúdio 21 concerts and also at important events featuring contemporary music, such as the Panorama da Música Brasileira Atual, the Bienal de Música Brasileira Contemporânea and the Composers' Ensemble at Princeton, where his music has been played for 3 consecutive years. He has also been performed by many foreign musicians and groups like Mélomanie, Stephen Preston and AmaraGuitry. His "Suite for strings" received an award at the II Rio de Janeiro National Composition Contest. His work "Fantasia for solo flute" was premiered by Laura Rónai at Princeton University in 1999, where he lectured in February 2000.

Oliveira went back to US in 2000 for the premiere of his work "Faces", in New Jersey. In 2002, a lecture for the Music Library Association, in the contemporary music roundtable, in Las Vegas. In 2003, he was invited for the premiere of his work "The line and the point", in Boston, in a event of Handel and Haydn Society. He has talked about the piece, and the audience gave him an standing  ovation after the performance.

His piece “Faces”, for two baroque flutes, was premiered in Crosswicks, NJ, in 2000 and in 2001 was published by Falls House Press. In 2002, Falls House Press published another piece composed by Oliveira: "Mot pour Laura", also premiered in the USA.

Among the articles were Oliveira has been noted, are his interview for 21st Century Music, an article published by the site “Andante” and the article published by "The Flutist Quarterly" (a publication of the National Flute Asociation), called "Circus Brasilis - the flute music of Sergio Roberto de Oliveira".

In 2006 his CD "Sem Espera" was released by A Casa Discos. In this CD, Sergio shows part of his flute music.

He is also member of Tasto - two composers at the piano, a contemporary music duo, working as a composer and a performer with Marcio Conrad.

Sergio Roberto de Oliveira has worked in the field of popular music as a composer, arranger, producer, and pianist; he has been awarded many prizes in this area. This knowledge of popular music is fundamental in shaping his musical personality, since his compositions tap into both popular sources and refined, traditional compositional skills, thus reflecting an insider's vision of the popular culture of his country.
